I disagree with the two of "you," but impressed by the transparency of the exercise.

To the degree that "all attention is now on context" it's more important than ever to divorce the art from the market, an oeuvre's cumulative vision from the blather of grade inflation and career bandwagoneers. The fact that people you don't rate opportunistically fall in line with praise shouldn't by itself change your mind about Davis. There should be a word for that.

Also, you're right in saying that Davis made "a museum that museums couldn't make for themselves." That's his greatest artwork, but doesn't diminish his forcibly incomplete painting project one iota.

Kudos to you both.

I think we are (all) actually in agreement. I’m just curious what other markets we need to divorce: the market for attention, for status, for morals, for missions. I’m not after the monad, but the struggle for recognition demands something new today.
