What is Consecutive Matters?

As my first post mentions, this SubStack is — right now — an informal collection of work-in-progress that covers the arts, entrepreneurship, art markets, criticism, politics, and associated things. I’m going to endeavor to post regularly, though I’ve never been good at self-imposed deadlines.

I’m co-founder of Inversion Art, an investment accelerator program and artist services agency designed to give visual artists the knowledge, connections, and operational support they need to focus on creating their work. By providing artists with access to world-class mentors, a talented peer group, a high quality network, financial investment, and business support, Inversion gives artists the means and mindset to achieve their most ambitious goals.

Prior to Inversion Art I was Associate Provost of Academic Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, as well as an Associate Professor of Art Business and Arts Management at Claremont Graduate University. Prior to joining the Provost’s office, I was the Founding Director of the Center for Business and Management of the Arts (CBMArts) at CGU, and before that I was the Founding Director of Sotheby’s Institute of Art — Los Angeles.

I have have served in various editorial roles, most recently as Contributing Editor, for ArtReview magazine. From 2011-2016 I edited the Held Essays on Visual Art for The Brooklyn Rail. These were collected and published by The Rail, along with my colleague Alexander Nagel’s contributions, as Bending Concepts. It’s a beautifully designed book and gives a slice of what was going on at the height of artistic and critical thinking in the early 2010s. And from 2008 until 2014 I was Executive Editor at The Drawing Center in New York City, where I worked with Brett Littman and Joanna Ahlberg (of ahl&co) to revamp the museum’s award winning Drawing Papers publication series.

In 2005 I co-founded Boyd Level LLC, a private curatorial firm and consultancy that specialized in contemporary art and was in operation until about 2010.

Back in the day did a PhD in 20th-Century Art History at Columbia University a B.Arch at Cornell University.
